Obituary

Richard R. Tremitiedi, 1938-2023. Richard R. Tremitiedi, 84, retired City of Hoboken Fire Chief and U.S. Army veteran, passed away at Riverview Medical Center on Thursday, March 23, 2023, with his loving children at his side. Born December 6, 1938, son of the late Joseph and Phyllis Tremitiedi, he was a graduate of Hoboken High School, Class of 1955. Richard was appointed to the Hoboken Fire Department on May 26,1960. Remarkably he was promoted to Captain on April 4, 1965, being the youngest fireman to be promoted to Captain at the time. Subsequently he was promoted to Deputy Chief on March 1, 1976 and Fire Chief on March 1, 1990 and retired on September 1, 1995. While serving in the Hoboken Fire Department Richard also pursued his college education and graduated from Essex County college in 1984. Richard was dedicated to the Fire Service and served in many organizations. He was a trustee of the FMBA Local 500 for Active Retirees. As well as a member of the American Legion, Elks, Knights of Columbus, NJ Fireman’s Retirement Association, and the Community Emergency Response Team. During his retirement he continued to touch the hearts and lives of his family and many friends as well as continuing to contribute to the fire service. Retired Fire Chief Richard Tremitiedi was the President of Fire Smart, Inc. and provided coaching and tutoring as a Certified Assessor and Civil Service Expert to upcoming fireman for 20 years.

Richard is predeceased by his wife Mary Tremitiedi, previously predeceased by a former wife Irene Tremitiedi, and daughter Christine Tremitiedi. He is survived by his loving children, Mary Margaret Nielsen, Michael and his wife Gioia Tremitiedi, grandchildren Holli Stanton, Nicholas and his wife Hannah Tremitiedi, and Natalie Tremitiedi, and great grandchildren, Lincoln Stanton, Dorian Cooper, and Skyler Cooper, and 5 nieces and nephews, and 5 great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Richard Tremitiedi are being held Monday, March 27th,  2 PM-4 PM & 7 PM-9 PM at the Failla-McKnight Memorial Home, 533 Willow Avenue, Hoboken, NJ. Funeral Mass Tuesday, March 28th, 10 AM at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church, 308 Jefferson Street, Hoboken, followed by the burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, 340 Ridge Road in North Arlington NJ.
