Obituary

Michael Mongiello, 76, of Hoboken passed away on February 24th, 2025 at Hackensack Medical Center.

Michael is survived by Barbara, his loving wife for forty-nine years; his children, Marc and
Jeffrey; his daughter-in-law, Rachel; his grandchildren, Regina and Jeremy; his sister and
brother-in-law, Stephanie and John Wauters; and his nephews, John Jr. and David.

His brother, Peter, and his parents, Stephen and Lena, predeceased him.

Michael dedicated his life to his family and was beloved as a husband, father, and grandfather.
In his spare time, he enjoyed running and watching baseball, basketball, and soccer. He loved
weekends down the shore in Belmar with his family. He was an enthusiastic traveler, highlighted
by memorable trips to Italy with his family. When his sons were younger, Michael spent
countless years coaching youth soccer in Hoboken for the recreation league and travel teams. In
recent years, he cherished taking on the role as Papa to his grandchildren.
A lifelong resident of Hoboken, Michael had fond memories of growing up on Riverview
Terrace. He graduated high school from Stevens Academy in Hoboken, before attending Jersey
City State College.

Michael began his career as a teacher in Hoboken. He met the love-of-his-life, Barbara, when
both taught at Connors School. The two happily married in 1975.

While teaching, Michael attended law school at night, and graduated from New York Law
School in 1980. He entered law practice with his father, Stephen, at Mongiello & Mongiello,
Attorneys-at-Law, in Hoboken. The two worked side-by-side together until Stephen’s death in 1996. Mongiello & Mongiello served their clients for ninety years from 1935 until 2025.

As a lawyer, Michael was called to public service. He worked for the City of Hoboken for
twenty-five years. For sixteen years, Michael served as municipal prosecutor. In 2010, Michael
was sworn in as Chief Municipal Judge in Hoboken. He would hold that office until his
retirement in 2019.

Visitation will be held at Failla Memorial Home on Saturday, March 1, between 12:00pm and 2:00pm,
and 5:00pm and 7:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to be made in Michael’s
memory to the Hoboken Community Center Food Pantry.
