Obituary

John Heslin, at the age of 86, said his final Irish good-bye from HarborView Nursing Home on 3/22/26.  Born and raised in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, John resided in Hoboken from 1973 until his transfer to long-term care in June of 2025.  John is predeceased by his loving wife of 40 years, Maureen (Dorry), his parents, Walter and Nora (Fielding), his sister, Eileen Cuzzo, and his brother, Charlie.

John worked for the NYC Department of Health in Queens for 30 years and retired as a Senior Supervisor for the Motor Vehicle Operations.  He also drove a cab in the city on nights and weekends, claiming to have given rides to the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis and Robert DeNiro (although his eyesight was never great when it came to celebrities).  He liked to think he resembled Al Pacino, though he looked more like Dustin Hoffman. He excelled at bowling and pool, winning tournaments in New York and New Jersey.  He was an avid fisherman and spent much of his time fishing off the piers in Hoboken.  John never liked to stay home but when he did, he watched the Mets and Yankees, the Rangers, and the Giants.

John was gentle and kind, especially when it came to animals, children, and the elderly (though he refused to put himself in that last category).  He walked around Hoboken with pockets full of dog treats, and loved to play a pirate for kids who marveled at his eyepatch.

John will be greatly missed by his children:  Noreen and her partner Chris Vrba, his son, Christopher, his daughter, Erin Moyeno and her husband, Christian, nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and animals everywhere.

The wake will be held at Failla-McKnight Memorial Home, 533 Willow Avenue, Hoboken, NJ, on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 from 4-8 PM.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in John’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
