Giovina Uva nee Amato, 94, of Hoboken passed away on Friday, April 25th, 2025 at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Born in Molfetta, Italy Giovina immigrated to Hoboken when she was 17 years old with her younger brother. She married her beloved husband in Italy and they returned to the United States, where they lived a full life together. Giovina attended Jersey City State College and earned her Masters degree in Education. She retired from the Hoboken School system after almost 30 years and was beloved by her students and colleagues.
Giovina was a founding member of the Padre Pio Prayer group and its treasurer for more than 20 years. She was also a proud member of the St. Mary’s Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, and a supporter of many charities.
She was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband Nicolo in 2008 and a cherished son Anthony in 2020. She was also predeceased by three endeared brothers Emilio, Mauro and Salvatore Amato.
Surviving is a devoted daughter Justine and husband Richard Sgaramella, a cherished son John Paul and his wife Elizabeth and a loving daughter in law Jean Uva, wife of the late Anthony Uva. Also surviving is her only sister Clara Turchi.
She will be forever missed by her grandchildren, Eleanor, Emma, Christian, Nicholas and John, her honorary grandchildren AnnMarie, Stephanie and Christina; and many loving nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Mass will be offered at St Ann’s RC Church on Tuesday, April 29th, 2025 beginning at 11AM.
THERE WILL BE NO VISITATION AT THE FUNERAL HOME.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather directly at St. Ann’s RC Church, Hoboken no later than 10:30AM.
Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum with her late husband in North Arlington, NJ.
