Obituary

Giovanni (John) Baptist Amato, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Hudson Regional Medical center on Wednesday, August 30th 2023.

John was born May 8, 1935 to his wonderful parents who are deceased Vincenzo Amato and Felicia Elizabeth Amato (nee Frezza).

He was married to his childhood sweetheart and love of his life Josephine Amato (nee Gambuto). They were happily married for 64 loving years.

They have four devoted children Vincent Amato, Lisa Amato-Myers (Jerry), John Amato Jr (Jane) and Josephine Amato-Lewis (Darryl).  He was adored by his 9 grandchildren Olivia Myers-Johnson (Joel), Pia Beck (Trevor), Giovanni Lewis, John Amato III, Darra Lewis, Aedan Amato, Halia Lewis, Jude Amato and Adrienne Amato.   

Blessed to be a great grandfather to Sigrid Johnson. He is also survived by his sister Maryann Vitolo , predeceased by his brother-in-law Dominick. He is survived by his sister-in-law Mary Amato and predeceased by his best friend and brother Vincent Amato.  He is survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. 

John was a man of unwavering faith and an undying love for his family. He also loved his business his home away from home Fiore’s House of Quality. “The taste of a good Mozzarella is remembered long after the price is forgotten” John was a man of joy and charity.

A legend in the Hoboken community. He loved his patrons! Generations of families and customers were always greeted with a sincere smile and a piece of his famous mozzarella.  He was always a happy man and was truly a living saint to those who had the pleasure and honor of meeting him.

John was truly one of a kind. He was a man of faith who loved to sing and whistle in happiness. In June, he was honored by The Hoboken Museum “Everybody Eats Mozzarella Recollection of John Amato Sr.  John was also honored from Saint Francis Roman Catholic Church Hoboken New Jersey Holy Name Society as a Past President.

In lieu of flowers we would love you to continue John’s charitable endeavors and give to the St Francis church to feed the poor as well as the Hoboken Soup Kitchen.

Visitation will be held at Failla-Mcknight Memorial Home on Tuesday September 5th, 2023 beginning at 3pm and concluding at 7pm.

Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 6th, 2023 at St. Francis RC Church in Hoboken at 11am.
