Angelo Anthony Caprio, M.D., Ph.D., of Farmington, CT (formerly of Hoboken, NJ) passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026, at the age of 73, following a lifetime devoted to service, medicine, family, and country.
Born and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey, Angelo embodied the values of hard work, dedication, and compassion throughout his life. He graduated from Saint Peter’s Preparatory School in 1970 before earning his bachelor’s degree from Saint Peter’s University in 1974. He continued his medical education at the Università di Roma, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in 1980, before completing his residency at Jersey City Medical Center.
Over a career spanning nearly five decades, Dr. Caprio became one of Hudson County’s most respected surgeons. His commitment to his patients, his profession, and the communities he served earned him the admiration of colleagues and countless families whose lives he touched. To thousands of patients, colleagues, students, and friends, he was simply known as “Doc.”
Beyond the operating room, Commander (CDR) Caprio proudly served his country in the United States Navy Reserve. During Operation Desert Storm, he was deployed to Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia, with his final deployment serving alongside the 3rd Battalion, 14th Marines out of Philadelphia. His military service reflected the same sense of duty and selflessness that defined every aspect of his life.
Dr. Caprio also served as Disaster Coordinator at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Hoboken, where his leadership proved invaluable during and after the events of September 11, 2001. Always seeking to expand his leadership beyond clinical practice, he later earned a Master of Medical Management degree from Tulane University. He also served as an Adjunct Professor at Saint Peter’s University, returning to his alma mater to share his knowledge and experience with the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Outside of medicine and military service, Angelo was deeply committed to Freemasonry. To his Masonic brethren, he was known as Right Worshipful Brother Angelo Caprio. His Masonic journey began when he was initiated as an Entered Apprentice on January 18, 2002, passed to the degree of Fellow Craft on March 17, 2003, and was raised to the degree of Master Mason on September 20, 2003. He went on to serve as Worshipful Master of Enterprise Lodge in 2010, Grand Chaplain (2014–2015), Trustee of the Masonic Charity Foundation (2017–2020), and Grand Tyler (2018–2019) for the Grand Lodge of New Jersey. On May 11, 2016, he co-founded Hippocrates Renaissance Lodge No. 304, serving as its Charter Master. In November 2020, he was conferred the 32° in the Scottish Rite, Valley of Northern New Jersey, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. Throughout his Masonic journey, he exemplified the principles of brotherhood, integrity, charity, leadership, and service that guided every aspect of his life. Above all, he understood that true charity extended beyond the grave and into the boundless realms of eternity. His service didn’t end with his life.
Angelo was predeceased by his parents, Angelo “Maxie” Caprio and Teresa “Tess” Caprio (née D’Amelio).
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Kimberly Caprio; their son, Mason; and his cherished dog, Artie.
He is also survived by his children, Angelo “AJ” Caprio and his wife, Falynn, and their daughters, Charlotte and Courtney; John Caprio and his fiancée, Kimberly Marchese; and Dr. Colleen Caprio and her husband, Dr. Vikram Patel, who are joyfully awaiting the arrival of twins this October.
He is further survived by his sister, Ann Michele Swineford, and her husband, Robert “Bobby” Swineford; their children, Dr. Jason Swineford and his wife, Lindsey, and their son, Brock; Lucas Swineford and his wife, Stacey, and their children, Nate and Ella; and Angela Yezdanian and her husband, Michael, and their daughter, Lily.
In addition to his family, Angelo leaves behind countless friends, colleagues, fellow physicians, military brothers and sisters, and Masonic brethren, many of whom he considered family.
Though his professional accomplishments were remarkable, those who knew Angelo will remember him most as “Doc”—a physician, Navy officer, teacher, Mason, husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor, and friend whose greatest calling was caring for others. Whether in an operating room, on military deployment, in a classroom, or among his Masonic brethren, he led with quiet humility, unwavering dedication, and a lifetime of service.
Celebration of Life
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, at Failla-McKnight Memorial Home, 533 Willow Avenue, Hoboken, New Jersey. Parking is available behind the funeral home, accessible from Sixth Street.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, August 10, 2026, at 10:30 AM, at St. Francis R.C. Church, 308 Jefferson Street, Hoboken, New Jersey.
Cremation will be private.
